 THE LORD'S TRANSFIGURATION

Matthew 17:1-8

 

BACKGROUND (16:13-23)

      1.      “Who do people say that I am?” – Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ

      2.      Jesus tells of His coming death – Peter rebukes Christ

      3.      “Get behind Me Satan!” – Peter rebuked by Christ

 

JESUS TOOK PETER, JAMES AND JOHN MOUNTAIN CLIMBING (v. 1)

1.      Even after the discussion with Peter a week prior, He invites Him to see His glory

 

HE WAS TRANSFIGURED (v. 3-4)

1.      METAMORPHOO – a change of form (2 Cor. 3:18; Rom. 12:2)

2.      His face shone like the sun and His garments were white as light (Rev. 1:9-16)

3.      Moses and Elijah show up

a.      He was talking to them

                                                              i.      Luke 9:31 says “departure” , EXODOS (Heb. 11:22; 2 Pet. 1:15)

                                                            ii.      Elijah’s view was a taken up whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11)

                                                          iii.      Moses view was dying on Pisgah on Mt. Nebo (Deut. 34:1-7)

b.      Moses representing the Law

c.       Elijah representing the prophets and those who will be “taken up”

 

JESUS IS PREEMINENT (v. 5-8)

1.      Preoccupied Peter wants to build buildings for them, with Jesus as “one of the boys”

2.      God interrupts him

a.      The sound caused the disciples to be terrified and fall face down

b.      This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”

c.       When they looked up there was only Jesus left

                                                              i.      Peter recalls the event (2 Pet. 2:15-19)

                                                            ii.      Jesus’ word is primary; to be listened to (Heb. 1:1-3)

 

CONCLUSION: There is no one except Jesus

1.      Listen to Him…when He tells you to pick up your cross and follow Him

2.      Listen to Him…when He tells you to abide in Him

3.      Listen to Him…when He tells you to continue in His word

4.      Listen to Him…when He tells you to love one another

5.      Listen to Him…when He tells you to go make disciples

6.      Listen to Him…when He tells you to enter through the narrow gate
