Hebrews 11:23-29
I. BY FAITH MOSES WAS HIDDEN (Exodus 1:1 - 2:10)
A. Israel was a mighty threat to Egypt
B. Pharaoh came up with a solution
C. Israel women were blessed because of faith
D. Raised by his mother in the ways of the true God
II. BY FAITH MOSES CHOSE PERSECUTION RATHER THAN PRINCE (2:11-3:22)
A. He knew they were his brethren
B. Fear drove Moses out of Egypt even though he was judge and prince
C. Moses marries Zipporah
D. God sends Him back by the burning bush
E. Moses stuttered so God used Aaron
F. Moses needed proof that he was to be judge so God used signs and “I AM”
III. BY FAITH MOSES LEFT EGYPT (Chapters 7-11)
A. Moses had to have his own life in order before he could lead Israel (4:24-26)
B. Ten plagues are used to convince all that there is only one God-certainly not Pharaoh
1. Nile – Khnum – guardian of Nile, Hapi – “spirit of Nile”, Osiris – God of underworld (Nile is bloodstream), Sepek – crocodile, Neith – interested in lates (largest fish in Nile), Hathor – protected chromis (smaller fish)
2. Frog - represented fruitfulness, blessing, assurance of harvest. Heqt – goddess represented by frog, symbol of resurrection, fertility, assists in child birthing.
3. Gnats - aimed at priesthood (focused on physical purity)
4. Flies – Uatchit is manifested by flies laying eggs in host (Israel finds redemption)
5. Cattle – Bull (Ptah and Re), Cow (Hathor)
6. Boils – Sekhmet (control over epidemics), Serapis (healing), Imhotep (medicine)
7. Hail – Nut (sun/warmth), Isis and Seth (crops)
8. Locusts – 100,000,000 per sq. mile, 400 sq. miles
9. Darkness – Re (sun, represented by Pharoah), Aten (sun disc), Atum (setting sun),
10. Death of the first born – Min (procreation), Isis (offspring), Hathor (love, child birth), Apis Bull (first born animal), Pharaoh’s first born was successor and thought to be produced with help of gods and with divine property. (12:12)
IV. BY FAITH MOSES KEPT THE PASSOVER (Chapter 12)
A. In the midst of the tenth plague Moses and the people of Israel showed great faith by doing exactly what God says in order to receive the blessing and grace of God.
B. Spotless Lamb – Jesus is the sinless Lamb of God
C. Unbroken bones – Jesus’ legs weren’t broken
D. Unleavened bread – in a hurry to get out of Egypt
E. Bitter herbs – bitter slavery
F. Blood on the doorposts – when He sees the blood He passes over
V. BY FAITH MOSES LED THEM THROUGH THE RED SEA (Chapter 14)
A. Moses believed God was going to do what He said and was going to save Israel. So he led the people of God on the dry ground of the Red Sea floor with Pharaoh in pursuit.
B. They were all baptized in the cloud and in the sea.
1. They did so by faith
2. They “saw the salvation of God” when they came out of the sea
3. They which enslaved them and killed them was buried under the sea
